Highway Maintenance Workers are responsible for ensuring the state highways are kept safe and drivable for the traveling public at all times. This position involves working as a member of a crew. Duties may include, but are not limited to performing roadway maintenance activities; performing roadside activities; installing and replacing signs, permanent traffic control devices, and pavement markings; maintaining and repairing guardrail systems; performing structure maintenance and repair activities; performing winter maintenance; maintaining and repairing department facilities and properties; performing preventative maintenance and equipment repair; responding to emergencies and other incidents; providing on-the-job training and work direction; providing temporary traffic control through and around work zones and emergency/hazardous sites; maintaining documentation; and operating and using a variety of equipment and tools; and promoting a safe work environment and participating in public safety activities.
Formal Education: Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational or technical processes.

Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Experience: Under and including one year, preferably in maintenance and/or construction.

Certification & Other Requirements: Valid Class C driver's license required. CDL Class B preferred but not required.

Responsibilities: Removal of all litter, debris, and unwanted items within landscape limits.Landscape maintenance including but not limited to weed removal, mulch replacement , applying fertilizer and erosion repair.Mowing, edging, weed eating, brush and tree trimming, chipping and removal of brush and trees.Assisting with the installation, removal and/or replacement of landscape material.Participate in Snow and Ice Events by preparing, operating, and cleaning various pieces of equipment and vehicles.Proper operation and inspection of all equipment, tools, and vehicles, before and after use. Reporting any damage and/or failures in accordance with established procedures.

The purpose of this position is to provide professional maintenance on landscape, turf, and associated components within maintenance limits by removing litter/debris, weeding, performing activities related to landscape maintenance, as well as, other activities associated with improving the appearance and condition of the landscape.
